Head of BGS Boys' Junior School update - 22/06/2018

Dear Parents

As we speed towards the end of term with school events rolling around at an ever-increasing rate, it is good to take a moment to stop and look at what has been and is yet to come. I have listed the end-of-term forthcoming events below but equally wanted to inform you of the amazing assembly I have just witnessed from our youngest boys. It is nearly a year since a group of Year 2 pupils came for their induction afternoon, moving up to ‘big school’, and today saw them deliver a confident and articulate performance to their parents and families, all about the journey they have been on over the past 12 months.

What astounded me most was the photographs of the boys when they first joined; they now appear so much more ‘grown-up’. The cyclic educational journey that all children travel on, never really gets noticed until you stop and look back. This is especially true for teachers, who start in September, meet their new class, and recall just how accomplished their old class were when they moved up! Over the next few weeks, I implore you to remember what your son was like just one year ago; what they could and could not achieve, their level of confidence, what they had or had not experienced, even the size of their shoes! It is good to take a moment to look back, as all too soon, they will be studying GCSEs, A-Levels, and have then left to go to University and live their lives. It pays to look back as well as on.

Our author visit on Monday was hugely inspirational and I know the boys thoroughly enjoyed listening to Clive Mantle’s wonderful stories of his adventures to Mount Everest. It is often difficult to hold children’s attention for more than five minutes, let alone an hour, but the boys listened avidly to tales of Tibet and how the book was written off the back of personal experiences. Our thanks to Clive and to Madeleine Lindley, whom we work closely with. I would also like to announce a fantastic coup for BGS for next September. Visiting the school will be none-other than children’s laureate, author, and cartoonist, Chris Riddell. I look forward to bringing you further details at the start of next year.

There have been plenty of other events happening in the Junior School this week and you can read more about them in our further news section. I hope to see many of you at the Summer Fun Day on Sunday. The Parents’ Association have been working hard to ensure that a fabulous day happens and I am positive that this will be just the case, despite me once again being lined up for the stalls!

Have a wonderful weekend.
