Old Boy completes astonishing feat of swimming the Gibraltar Strait

Bury Grammar School Old Boy, Matt Johnson has completed the astonishing feat of swimming the Gibraltar Strait (without a wetsuit!) in April.

Not only was Matt, who left BGS in 1988, able to do it before April 25, but he is one of fewer than ten people to complete it in a water temperature of only 15C.

Matt completed the swim in a time of 4 hours and 31 minutes.

Over 4,000 people have summited Everest, fewer than 650 have swum the Gibraltar Strait without a wetsuit, and fewer than 30 have ever done it before 25th April.

Only 10 have ever done it in temperatures as cold as 15 degrees C – BGS Old Boy Matt Johnson (1988) is one of them. He ended up beating his brother-in-law by 30 seconds.

He followed it up 10 days later by swimming from Lanzarote to Fuerteventura in conditions he described as "brutal".

Well done, Matt!
