A warm welcome to all parents and pupils at BGSB on what is very much a busy start to the year.
We welcome Mr Griffiths to the department this year who is also a former professional rugby league player. His infectious enthusiasm for sport is already spreading and having an impact.
Saturday brought our first block fixture against Queen’s Elizabeth Grammar School (QEGS) with wins in four out of the five football matches played. However, Saturday meant much more than four wins, it made me reflect on the 70 boys that had risen early on a Saturday morning and represented the school. Those boys are gaining vital life skills whilst having fun, it surely doesn’t get better than that!
Participation In sport teaches you to win with grace and lose with dignity. It teaches you much about your character and develops your ability to get on with others. I very much urge you to encourage your sons to play sport and to support their teams
Next weekend we will play football and rugby fixtures against two different schools, where 100 boys will be up early to enjoy themselves on a Saturday morning - that’s quite something.
Yours in sport,
The 1st XI game was tight from the start with BGS taking a 1-0 lead into half time with a goal from Seb Marsi. QEGS started the second half well and took a 2-1 lead. BGS quickly responded with two goals from Oliver Dufton. The 1st XI held onto the led despite some late pressure to win the game 3-2.
An excellent start for the U15s saw them comfortably win away at QEGS. Two goals for Ben Holland and a goal each for Louie Lerman and Tom Sullivan gave BGS a 4-0 win.
A slow start for the year 9s meant that they found themselves behind after the first 10 mins.
However after a Bennet goal the dynamics of the game changed, and BGS were on top , with some great passing displays from Tom Kirby. QEGS ahead at half time. An outstanding reaction from BGS saw them dominate the game until a QUEGS penalty finished any hope of getting back into the game. Some outstanding saves from Archie Knight. A spirited performance for the first game of the season. Thank you all the boys, who enjoyed and applied themselves thoroughly throughout.
U12s vs QEGS
The year 7 team started their campaign with a great win at home to QEGS. End to end from the start, both teams deserve credit for a match that was full of effort and moments of quality. Leo Michaelovitz and Kieran Flanaghan scored 2 each with Mohammed Sohail scoring 1 to make it 5-3 going into the last 10 minutes. An excellent penalty save from Dowd and a consolation goal from QEGS made the final score 5-4.
