On Thursday 25th January, six Year 12 students attended the Rotary Youth Speaks local heat in Rochdale, discussing current topical issues of their choice.
The Rotary’s aim is to promote ‘a shared responsibility to take action on our world’s most persistent issues’, topics these students were able to discuss in a most mature and persuasive way.
The group was made up of two teams:
The first consisted of Isobel Lewis (proposer of the vote of thanks), Mariam Khan (chairperson) and Emily Wilson (speaker). Emily’s chosen topic to discuss was ‘Sexual Harassment’. Emily is an experienced public speaker, and this was her third competition to date. She dealt with a challenging and topical issue with real thought and maturity and the competition judges were highly impressed with her speech, awarding her the ‘Best Speaker’ certificate on the night. Mariam showed an excellent understanding of her role as chairperson and Isobel supported Emily’s speech with an enthusiastic proposal of thanks which also saw her earn the ‘Best VOT’ award.
The second group saw Sophie Parker take on the role of chairperson, Hashim Tahir deliver a speech as main speaker and Amaan Sadiq propose the vote of thanks. Sophie is also a previous Rotary participant and conducted her role of chair with a warmth and confidence that earnt her much praise, as well as the award of ‘Best Chairperson’. Hashim spoke about the negative portrayal of video gaming in the media. This was Hashim’s first experience of the Rotary heats but he spoke with real passion and personality. Hashim was well-supported by Amaan who proposed a vote of thanks with just the right touch of humour.
Miss Clarke and Miss Elliott were very proud of both teams, whose passion, talent and enthusiasm saw them represent Bury Grammar School impeccably. After much deliberation by the judges, the team of Sophie, Hashim and Amaan were chosen to progress to the district final which will be held on Saturday 4th March. We wish them all the very best in their preparations for the next round of the competition.
