Fundraising
Fundraising is an important part of life at Bury Grammar School, embraced by our pupils, students, staff and the wider community. We are continually inspired by the generosity and enthusiasm of those who support our efforts.
Through our extensive community service programme, we demonstrate a strong commitment to both fundraising. Each year we work to make a meaningful impact, locally and beyond, by supporting a wide range of causes and initiatives that matter to our community.
This year, Bury Grammar School has partnered with the charity Village by Village to raise funds to build a Junior High School in Parko Junction, Ghana!
bgs Chosen Charities
National Charities
Nationally, we support Young Lives vs Cancer through non-uniform days and an annual bike collection in December in aid of Cyclists Fighting Cancer. We also take part in Christmas Jumper Day for Save the Children—a fun and meaningful way to raise awareness and funds.
International Charities
Internationally, we continue to support the Sal’s Shoes appeal by donating pre-loved footwear to children in need around the world. Our pupils have also chosen to raise funds for the World Wildlife Fund (WWF)—an initiative supported by staff cake sales during extended break times and a joyful Charity Bunny Hop/Speed Bounce event led by our Primary Division.
We aspire to broaden the reach and deepen the impact of our fundraising efforts at BGS, creating meaningful social and charitable outcomes. As part of this commitment, we hold assemblies across all sections of the School, led by both our Charity Council Representatives and representatives from the charities themselves.
The Charity Council engages with local charities through visits—supporting their work firsthand and connecting with those who benefit from the vital services they provide.
The role of a Form Charity Representative
Each year, pupils nominate and elect Form Charity Representatives, who then form a smaller Charity Council. This council plays a central role in shaping our fundraising efforts, selecting six charities to support throughout the academic year. The role offers our most altruistic pupils a meaningful opportunity to lead and represent their peers in charitable giving.
At the start of the year, Form Representatives are invited to nominate charities they believe deserve support, along with reasons for their choices. These nominations are then shared with the wider pupil body, who vote to decide which charities BGS will support. Pupils are encouraged to propose smaller charities where our support can make a particularly significant impact.
Each year, we support two local, two national, and two international charities. Of these, one in each category is supported financially, while the other receives non-fiscal donations, such as items or time.
