Fundraising

Fundraising is an important part of school-life at Bury Grammar School for our pupils, students, staff and and wider community and we are always overwhelmed by the support we receive.

We have a real commitment to fundraising and volunteering through our extensive community service programme and support the local and wider community each year, making a real impact on the community around us.

bgs Chosen Charities for 2022-23

The chosen charities for the school year 2022-23 are:

Locally, as we have done for some years now, we will continue to support Bury Hospice as a local charity through our Heartbeat Bury Event. This year we also supported Porch Boxes through our Christmas Reverse Advent collection.

Nationally, Young Lives vs Cancer will be supported through our non-uniform days and we arranged a bike collection in December to support Cyclists Fighting Cancer. We also participated in Christmas Jumper Day for Save the Children too, though this was not one of our nominated charities.

Internationally, we will once again donate shoes to the Sal's Shoes appeal, and pupils have also chosen to support the World Wildlife Fund. Money for this will be raised by staff donations over extended breaktimes with cake, a Primary Division Charity Bunny Hop/Speed Bounce and a further donation will be made at the end of the year.

Our aspiration is to develop the scope of the meaningful social impact and charitable outcomes that our fundraising at BGS can do. This will include assemblies in all sections of the school led by both our Charity Council Representatives and also led by the charities themselves. The Charity Council will be engaging further with local charities through visits to support the work that they do and to speak to people who benefit from the many services offered.

The role of a Form Charity Representative

Form Charity Representatives are nominated and elected each year, which forms a smaller Charity Council and the selection of six charities to support this academic year. The role of the Charity Council is an opportunity for some of our most altruistic pupils to represent and lead their peers in charitable giving.

Every year, Charity Representatives from each form are invited to nominate the charities that they think should be considered and the reasons for their choices. This information is then collated and sent out to pupils to vote. The results of this vote decides the charities supported. Pupils are encouraged to nominate smaller charities for whom the support that we could provide would have a greater impact.

We support two local, two national and 2 international charities. One of each will be supported financially and the other will be supported through non-fiscal donations.

"We focus on how to embed a greater appreciation of the importance of charity at all different stages in a young person's life and providing our young people with clear information about the impact these charities make: developing engagement between the nominated charities and our young people is an important part of our charity focus."
