Communication with Parents
The cornerstone of our success at Bury Grammar School is the partnerships we build between school, home and pupils.
Academic success in no accident and we know from experience is the product of a well-informed approach from pupils, parents and teachers.
We pride ourselves on involving parents with every step of their son or daughter’s journey through school and understand that access to information is crucial for busy parents. Parent involvement is integral to success. The involvement of parents in a three-way partnership with school ensures maximum support is given and positive outcomes. This is a fundamental part of our school ethos. We want to work with parents to ensure our pupils achieve their potential.
Homework is an important part of the learning process and establishes good independent study habits. Organisation is key in meeting deadlines and to ensure parents and pupils have access to accurate information in Years 3 – 13 we use the online platform ‘satchel:one’ to set and share homework tasks.
satchel:one is an online platform where teachers set detailed homework tasks, attach any accompanying resources and publish deadlines.
Pupils can access their online homework diary and calendar through the website or app, can mark tasks as completed and have access to the resources required to complete the homework.
Parents also receive a code to link themselves to their son or daughter and can also view the online homework diary and calendar through the parent app. This tool aids with organisation and crucially enables parents to support their sons or daughters in managing their time and studies effectively at home.
At the start of the academic year parents and pupils at key transition points in the school will be welcomed to information evenings held by academic and pastoral staff. These outline plans for the year ahead and give practical strategies to support pupils with their studies.
In Senior School and Sixth Form, annual parents’ evenings in all year groups along with Form Tutor evenings for Year 7, Options Evening for Year 8 and Higher Education evenings for Year 13 ensure that parents have every opportunity to ask us questions and be well equipped to support their children during these important times. Senior School pupils are invited to attend parents’ evening to take part in the dialogue with their teachers about their successes and areas for development.
PUPIL & PARENT PORTALS
Parents have access to our Parent Portal which broadcasts timetables, the school calendar, school news, individual school reports, exam timetables, key school contacts and other important documents. Parents are also able to report or request absence through the Parent Portal and update personal details.
Aware that our parents are as busy as our pupils, we send reminders for important events via SMS as well as alerts for changes to published plans, such as delayed trips or late fixtures.
Pupils also have access to our Pupil Portal which gives them access to all school notices, as well as their timetable, school reports and assessments and the school calendar and daily bulletin. Organisation is an important ingredient of success in education and access to this information enables our pupils to take responsibility for their planning and preparation.
