Sixth Form Curriculum
Bury Grammar School is well known for having one of the highest achieving Sixth Forms in the region.
Whilst academic success is extremely important, our teaching staff go beyond the constraints of the A Level courses and aim to instill a love of learning and curiosity that will last a lifetime. We also actively seek to provide our sixth formers with the knowledge, skills, confidence and tenacity to make the most of their university studies and professional lives.
Following the rigorous, national A Level reforms we have invested in our sixth formers to strengthen academic provision even further. Our Curriculum provides more teaching time per A Level subject to our Sixth Form students than local providers, giving them confidence and the best possible opportunity to achieve in this highly competitive examination system.
Our Sixth Formers benefit from an extra 2 hours and 30 minutes teaching time, per subject, in comparison with other local A Level providers.
Students usually choose 3 A Levels from a possible 21 courses- watch our A Level subject videos here:
'' Our options programmes in Year 11 is very comprehensive; we recognise that these are important decisions for our pupils and we want them to make the choices which best suit their personal strengths and academic interests. Pupils will have an Options' Evening which is immediately followed by a Parents' Evening. Talks by the Academic Leadership Team and our Careers' department allow us to present key information and all pupils also have a one-to-one meeting with a member of the Senior Leadership Team prior to making their final choices. Our regular assessment allows pupils and parents to have a good understanding of their progress at all times, vital information for making decisions about A Level courses. On top of this, pupils are able to speak to staff involved in the options process if they have any questions. The extensive support we put in place throughout Year 11 ensures our pupils can be confident with their final decisions.''
Mrs V Leaver, Director of Academic Provision
''I really wasn't sure which A Levels to choose as I enjoyed all of my GCSE subjects so much. The advice I received from my teachers really helped me to decide which were most suited to my abilities. I feel this level of support is unique to our Sixth Form.''
