Our enriching, creative English curriculum provides our pupils with inspiring cross-curricular links setting high expectations to ensure that children have the skills to be successful in reading, writing, speaking and listening. As an inclusive school, we provide opportunities to help those for whom English is an additional language and those with additional learning needs outlined in the SEND code of practice. Staff have a positive and friendly approach to teaching and learning in English, where children are challenged appropriately in a supportive environment. We recognise the importance of thorough planning and rigorous assessment, supporting the individual needs of our pupils.
Pupils thoroughly enjoy learning mathematics. Our curriculum has been developed to ensure in-depth understanding and playful enjoyment - both key to helping children reason mathematically. Our qualified staff enable all children to develop mastery and confidence in mathematics.
We enable pupils to develop:
- An appreciation of our number system and strong grasp of place value
- An excellent bank of number facts
- Exposure to consistent and developmental models and images
- Comprehension of the key maths operations including using negative numbers, fractions (including decimals and percentages), ratio and algebra
A high-quality science education provides the foundations for understanding the world through the specific disciplines of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Science has changed our lives and is vital to the world’s future prosperity, and all pupils are taught essential aspects of the skills, knowledge, methods, processes and uses of science.
Through building a body of skills, key foundational knowledge and concepts, pupils are encouraged to recognise the power of rational explanation whilst developing a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena. We pride ourselves on demonstrating to pupils how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict behaviour, and analyse causes.
Our high-quality humanities education inspires pupils to develop a curiosity and fascination about the world - its past and its people - that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. Teaching equips pupils with an appreciation and knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes.
Our curriculum is designed to ensure that pupils have lessons in the creative arts, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences. Music, drama, art and design all feature on our timetable and your child will have opportunities to produce their own imaginative and artistic work. The standard of work produced by BGS boys and girls is continually of a high standard.
Pupils study French from years 3 to 6 and are taught by experienced teachers and specialists who are adept at bringing out the very best in in our Junior pupils, providing the benefit of their knowledge and linguistic skills. Our staff provide a high-quality languages education that fosters pupils’ curiosity and deepens their understanding of the world. We aim to ensure that the pupils understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources. They speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, and, through discussion, continually improve the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation.
We believe that minds are much more effective when combined with physical activity, therefore pupils receive at least two hours of physical activity per week. Many pupils participate in further activity during lunchtimes or after school in our variety of sporting clubs.
Junior pupils have regular PE and swimming lessons, taught by specialist staff. They also have weekly games lessons in football, netball, rugby, rounders, hockey, athletics, cross country and tennis. Teams compete regularly in tournaments and competitions. The standard of sport throughout the school is high. Matches against other schools, both local maintained and other independents, are played during the week.
Our broad and balanced curriculum allows our children to develop their skills, knowledge and understanding in a whole range of subjects to prepare them for life in the 21st century.
