Primary Admissions (Age 4-11)
''My child loves BGS Primary! Since he has started he has developed a real love of learning and can't wait to go to school each morning!''
Year 3 Parent
Did you know, children who join Bury Grammar School in our Primary Division are not required to sit the 11+ entrance examination for entry into our Senior School?
We welcome applications at any point of the year for all stages of our Primary Division.
From their very first days at Bury Grammar School we get to know each child and encourage them to develop their individual strengths. We nurture a strong sense of being valued both as an individual and as a member of our community.
Assessment for a place in Reception is in the form of an informal observation carried out by a senior member of our Primary Team. Our aim is to ensure that Bury Grammar School is the right environment for your child to flourish.
From Year 1, applicants will be asked to sit English and Mathematics assessments to ensure that they are in line with our cohort and will thrive with the pace of learning in our Primary Division, and will be invited to meet with a senior member of the Primary Team to talk about their learning experience so far, hobbies and interests. We have applicants from many different backgrounds and schooling experiences and with this in mind we always look for potential, a desire to learn, an interest in the world around them and a questioning nature. As part of the admissions process we also ask the Headteacher of the pupils’ current school for a reference.
We also love meeting and talking to parents interested in our School. We are proud of our strong home-school partnership and recognise the importance and benefit of this relationship to our pupils. During the admissions process, parents will be invited to meet a senior member of the Primary Team to talk about their child, what is important to them and their aspirations for their child.
Our Primary Division pupils, provided they are making progress as expected (and usually they do much better than expected!) do not have to sit the 11+ entrance assessment for Senior School. This truly makes us an all though school. We have confidence that the high level of inspirational teaching in our Primary Division more than prepares pupils for their transition to Senior School.
While there is no formal deadline for the submission of applications, we strongly advise parents to apply earlier rather than later, given the demand for places.
Once settled into School, it is the norm for our pupils to make rapid progress and thoroughly enjoy their learning.

''We are absolutely delighted with how quickly our daughter has settled into Year 1. We were apprehensive about her moving schools, but in hindsight our only regret is that we did not do it sooner!''
