Bury Grammar Schools

Welcome to the Bury Grammar School Alumni pages. One of the primary aims of the Development Office is to improve communications with former pupils, friends and local businesses.

We have some very exciting news for 2020...

2020 is a very special year for Bury Grammar Schools as we celebrate our 450th Anniversary. We have a very rich history stretching back to 1570 when the School was first founded and the pupils past and present have made significant contributions to society both locally, nationally and across the globe throughout the centuries. Our 450th anniversary celebrations will bring together pupils, parents, staff, Alumni and friends of Bury Grammar School and members of the local community in a series of wonderful events during 2020 to mark this historic and memorable occasion. We are immensely proud of our illustrious past, which allows us to look into the future with great confidence.

The complete calendar of events for the year is featured on the main website and we welcome you to get involved wherever possible. From our Celebration Concert hosted by Old Girl Victoria Derbyshire to Grand Lunches, Fireworks and Fun Runs, we will be including a whole spectrum of activities. There will be an extra special Founders’ Day and a commitment of a brand new BGS Standard to celebrate the Anniversary.

Take a look and also PLEASE take part in our 450 Video Challenge – “What Bury Grammar School means to me”.

We will be using a brand new Alumni Facebook page to send you information and keep in touch about all things 450 so please do contact us.

450 Anniversary - changing a life through education

Whilst the focus of the 450 Anniversary is to celebrate the founding of the School, we wish to honour the memory and commitment of our Founders by raising as much money as possible towards our Bursary Fund and this will be our challenge for 2020 and we are hoping that you may give this some consideration.

Our task is to raise funds to enable the brightest children from the most challenging of backgrounds to attend BGS and receive an exceptional education. The academic side is not the only focus of our intent, as we want to ensure that these pupils also receive excellent pastoral care and personal support in consideration of any problems in their homelife.
Only the brightest children in the top 5% of the entrance exam can qualify and we rigourously check and means-test all of the successful applicants.  Last year we had over 130 applications and could only offer 15 bursaries.  We only have funds to support 87 bursaries across the whole School.

A pupil who receives a BGS bursary will find this a life changing experience - it is not a discount off the fees - but a major opportunity to transform a child’s life. Once a pupil has been shortlisted, myself and the bursars’ team visit these families in their homes. I can assure you that they are fully deserving of these awards and live in some challenging environments, sometimes due to parental illness or family breakdown.  They just need one chance to receive a great education which can change their lives forever. We have many amazing success stories, as these young people who benefit from our Bursary Fund are often amongst our highest achievers – they will make a valuable contribution to the workforce of the future. I have enclosed a small booklet outlining how essential bursaries are.  We would be so grateful if you could give this some consideration – you may have experienced the support of a bursary yourself.

For more information click onto the brochure below:

Our commitment in 2020 will be to raise enough money to fund 1 in 6 new bursaries from 2021 onwards which means raising over £1m.

We are therefore asking all of our Alumni to make a donation of minimum £45 to allow us to achieve our goal.
All donations will be personally acknowledged and published in our ‘450 Giving Report’ which will be produced at the end of the celebrations in 2020.

You can contribute many ways as follows:
  • Make a one off donation

Tell us :
Become part of BGS History….tell us what BGS means to you.
As part of our 450 celebrations we intend to create a BGS 450 Anniversary ‘Good Wishes’ Video’ featuring as any of our Alumni, pupils, staff and friends of BGS  as possible.
We will feature some of these videos on our website throughout the 2020 year and compile as many as possible into a final video at the end of the year so please rally friends and classmates - or nominate a friend to get involved!
We would like you to send a personal or group good wishes video outlining very briefly what BGS means to you.  You can mention special friends or teachers that inspired you – School trips or special assemblies - or classrooms and Sports Facilities that made School life so wonderful. Visit the BGS website and look at the historical timeline or ‘30 Thing’s about BGS for inspiration.
If you can record a video goodwill video on your phone or I pad and send it to or download it onto the Alumni website page.  Funny and poignant memories are all welcome – or just say hello and good luck – with your name and School year of course!
Alternatively ,If you prefer, just send a current picture with an accompanying text.
We would also love to receive any photos of your days at School, or any memorabilia that you have that you may lend or donate to the School Archives for our 450th year.
Please call the Development Office on 0161 764 1733 or email supportus – we will look after them!
