450 Anniversary Celebrations
A Warm Welcome to all Alumni from The Development Team at BGS
Alison Holland & Sharon Blakelock
Dear Alumni and Friends of the School,
We do hope that you are all well and staying safe in these difficult times.
It is with great sadness that we have decided to postpone many of our 450 Events that were scheduled for our Anniversary year. We had hoped to keep planning for the later celebrations but it looks highly unlikely that they will now go ahead – but we always live in hope!
The Development Office will be working from home and we are very conscious that we have a lot of elderly alumni. We urge you to stay safe and self-isolate. If you, or any of our BGS Alumni or community, need any help please do not hesitate to contact us and we will endeavour to provide any assistance locally and if possible nationally - through our network of Old Boys and Old Girls and colleagues.
We will keep you regularity updated on the School’s situation through our mailers but please do not hesitate to get in touch - even if you just want a chat!
This is a very worrying time for everyone and we will continue to work hard to provide for the Bursary pupils of the future. It is in these difficult moments that that we experience people’s true characters and we have seen the strong, caring and proud BGS spirit in abundance in the past weeks, amongst our pupils, staff and the community; everyone has pulled together to ensure that this wonderful School continues to thrive.
Please do stay safe and look after each other. If you want to share any memories or thoughts of BGS, do let us know and we will circulate them.
Sanctas Clavis Fores Aperit
With the warmest of wishes’
Alison and Sharon
Welcome to the Bury Grammar School Alumni and Fundraising pages. One of the primary aims of the Development Office is to improve communications with former pupils, friends and local businesses, and through this to raise funds for Bury Grammar School.
BGS has long been at the heart of the Bury community and we are rightly proud of our rich and illustrious history. BGS has thrived owing to a tradition of philanthropy and benefaction dating back to the School’s original founding in 1570.
The generous gifts from all of our benefactors and donors allow us to achieve our mission through the provision of Bursaries and by funding projects to preserve and enhance Bury Grammar School's magnificent 45-acre campus and facilities. The School is a registered charity and, as an Independent School, has received no funding from the Government since 1997. This means that our fundraising actions are born of necessity in order to preserve and maintain all that is BGS.
We have some very exciting news for 2020….
2020 is a very special year for Bury Grammar School as we celebrate our 450th Anniversary. We have a rich history stretching back to 1570 when the School was first founded, and the pupils past and present have made significant contributions to society both locally and nationally, as well as across the globe throughout the centuries. Our 450th Anniversary celebrations will bring together pupils, parents, staff, Alumni and friends of Bury Grammar School, and members of the local community in a series of wonderful events during 2020 to mark this historic and memorable occasion. We are immensely proud of our illustrious past, which allows us to look into the future with great confidence.
The complete calendar of events for the year is featured on the main website, and a list of Alumni Events is given below, we welcome you to get involved wherever possible. From our Celebration Concert hosted by Old Girl Victoria Derbyshire to Grand Lunches, Fireworks and Fun Runs, we will be including a whole spectrum of activities. Founders' Day will be especially poignant in 2020 and offers us all a chance to reflect on the historical success of the School. Later in the year we will honour the School's links with the Armed Forces and the Church of England through the commitment of the BGS Standard to celebrate the 450th Anniversary.
We have now launched a brand new ‘Alumni Facebook’ page for you to keep you in touch with all of our 450th Anniversary Activities - so please do contact us and like our page!

“WHAT BURY GRAMMAR SCHOOL MEANS TO ME”
Become part of BGS History….tell us what BGS means to you.
As part of our 450 celebrations we intend to create a BGS 450th Anniversary ‘Good Wishes’ Video’ featuring as many of our Alumni, pupils, staff and friends of BGS as possible. We will feature some of these videos on our website throughout the 2020 year and compile as many as possible into a final video at the end of the year, so please rally friends and classmates - or nominate a friend to get involved!
We invite you to record a personal or group ‘Good Wishes’ video on your phone outlining very briefly what BGS means to you. You can mention, for example, special friends or teachers that inspired you – School trips or special assemblies - or classrooms and Sports Facilities that made School life so wonderful.
Visit the BGS website and look at the historical timeline or ‘30 Thing’s about BGS’ for inspiration.
Please send all videos and pictures to firstname.lastname@example.org Funny and poignant memories are all welcome – or just say hello and good luck – with your name and School year of course!
Alternatively , if you prefer, feel free to send us a current picture with an accompanying text.
We would also love to receive any photos of your days at School, or any memorabilia that you have and would like to lend or donate to the School Archives for our 450th year. Please call the Development Office on 0161 764 1733 or email email@example.com – we will look after them!
PLEASE take part in our 450th Anniversary Video –
