Bury Grammar School offers an incredible assortment of school trips each year.

The following list includes all of the upcoming major trips:

Plas Menai - September 2023, Year 8

Our annual trip to the National Water Sports Centre at Plas Menai in North Wales offers a rich experience for our pupils.

Skills such as teamwork, communication, confidence building, and leadership are developed in a framework of fun activities ranging from power boating and wind surfing to orienteering and mountain biking.

 

Dubai - October 2023, Years 9 - 11

The Physical Education Department are delighted to be running a Multi Sports tour to Abu Dhabi and Dubai, in October 2023.

Below is a snapshot of what the trip is likely to include:

  • Training sessions and fixtures against local schools
  • Desert Safari with BBQ Dinner
  • Dubai Creek
  • La Mer Beach
  • Wild Wadi Waterpark with lunch
  • Yas Marina Circuit, Grand Prix.

 

German Exchange, November 2023, Years 9 to 12

We are pleased to announce that we are making plans for our forthcoming German Exchange with our partner school in Cologne. This is one of the longest-running pupil exchanges in the UK, and 2023 is its 68th year!  The Exchange provides pupils and students with the opportunity to practice their language skills, form new friendships and experience German culture. 

The programme of whole-group activities will include a day in school with the traditional netball / football matches, a visit to the picturesque town of Königswinter and a visit up the Triangleturm to view Cologne from above.  Our pupils will spend the weekend with their host families.  In previous years, they have undertaken a wide variety of activities such as a visit to the Chocolate Museum in Cologne, a trip to a theme park and an experience of the famous Karneval festival in Cologne. 

 

Ecuador - July 2024, Years 11 - 13

Bury Grammar School and World Challenge present Expedition to Ecuador, an incredible opportunity for our seniors and sixth formers to experience Ecuador.

This is a life-changing opportunity for BGS students to explore Ecuador, while developing their life skills, confidence and independence. We’re partnering with World Challenge to offer this 27 night trip, which complements school learning.

Ski Italy - March 2024, Years 7 and 8

We are very pleased to be running a ski trip for pupils in the current Year 7 and 8 to Italy in 2024. Here is what the trip will include: 

  • 5 days of 5-hour ski clinic programme 
  • Ski instructors 
  • Lift passes for Folgarida/Marilleva ski area
  • Equipment hire
  • Lunches on the mountain
  • Evening entertainment. 

 

Madrid Football Development Tour - March 2024, Year 6

The primary Division and the Sport Team are taking Year 6 on a Football Tour to Madrid in March 2024. The trip is open to all pupils regardless of footballing ability or experience. 

Pupils will enjoy:

  • 2 x friendly matches per squad against local similar standard opposition​
  • Behind the scenes tour of Santiago Bernabeu
  • Professional coaching and training opportunities along with use of the club and the facilities
  • 3 x Training sessions on all aspects of play from the Real Madrid full-time coaching staff​
  • Lovely hotel, full board, swimming pool.
 
Residential trip to Hothershall Lodge - May 2024, Year 6
 
This brilliant residential trip includes plenty of activities and new experiences! With abseiling, adventure gorge walking, archery, caving, barrel rafting, high ropes, kayaking, zip lining there is something for everyone.
 
Situated in the picturesque Ribble Valley, surrounded by woodland, water and fields, the seven acre grounds and canoe lake offer a great base for our trip!
 
Iceland Expedition - July 2024, Years 9 - 12
 
The Geography Department is delighted to offer pupils and students the opportunity to take part in an exciting expedition, a five-day tour of Iceland. 
 

Our itinerary has many highlights, including: 

  • Visiting to the new eruption site of the Fagradalsfjall volcano, which made the headlines in March 2021, to explore the newly formed lava flows and craters.    

  • Relaxing and bathing in a natural, geothermal spa and sample a volcanic mud bath. 

  • Taking a boat trip to Heimaey Island, a volcanic island off the coast of Iceland and the scene of one of the most destructive volcanic eruptions in the history of Iceland, including a hike up to the volcano summit. 

  • Exploring the vast, black volcanic beaches and the unique coastal landscape. 

  • Seeing spectacular waterfalls including walking behind Seljalandsfoss (you will get wet!) and a visit to the thunderous Gullfoss, one of Europe’s largest waterfalls. 

  • Standing next to erupting geysers, bubbling volcanic mud pools and extinct lake filled craters. 

  • Walking along the Mid Atlantic Ridge, the meeting point of the tectonic plates that run through Iceland. 

  • Exploring underground caverns and the magnificent lava tunnel, Raufarhólshellir. 

  • A whale watching trip from Reykjavík harbour into the Icelandic fjords for the chance to see minke whales, orcas, humpbacks, and dolphins, not to mention a bit of puffin spotting!  

 

Experience Montenegro with World Challenge - July 2025, Years 9 & 10 (at time of travel)

This is a life-changing opportunity for pupils to explore Montenegro, while developing their life skills, confidence and independence. We’re partnering with World Challenge to offer this 10-night expedition, which complements school learning. 

Pupils will:

  • Discover the largest lakes in the Balkans and visit Lake Skadar
  • Trek beneath mighty peaks and explore Budva and Kotor
  • Trek Durmitor National Park
  • Visit Lovcen National Park.

This once in  lifetime experience will prove just how much you're capable of and may just change the way you see yourself and the world, forever.
