Competitions

BGS competes in local and national competitions with a considerable degree of success.

There are a range of competitions for pupils which take place across many subject areas. The Biology, Languages and UKMT Challenges, Maths Olympiads and the Rotary Public Speaking events are just a few examples of areas in which BGS pupils can stretch themselves.

Aspiring Lawyers gain valuable court experience in the Sir Rhys Davies Mock Law Trial. Our team of Sixth Formers are given witness statements and other documents in order to prepare a case. They then attend Grammar Schools Manchester Crown Court and present either the case for the Prosecution or the case for the Defence against a team from another school or college. A real judge tries the case and returns a verdict at the conclusion.

Budding entrepreneurs set up and manage their own companies as they enter the Young Enterprise competition. They develop a product and raise capital before marketing and selling it. This is a particularly useful exercise in teamwork and is helpful for those interested in Business, Finance or Economics.

'' Young Enterprise is an exciting opportunity open to all Year 12 students as part of our enrichment programme. Students set up and finance their own Ltd for eight months, making all of the business decisions along the way. BGS has a long history of success in this national competition; last year scooping four trophies including one for Best Teamwork in the Manchester County Final. Watch out for this year’s teams who are busy developing their product ideas, ready to hit the market soon!''
