World Challenge
"Developing tomorrow's leaders through sustainable school travel."
At Bury Grammar School, we believe in providing our pupils and students with unparalleled opportunities for personal growth and development. We have proudly participated in the World Challenge programme for over ten years — a transformative experience that pupils enjoy year after year.
Exploring the World
Bury Grammar School participates in 10- and 28-day expeditions to diverse and vibrant developing countries across the globe. Our past destinations include Madagascar, Uzbekistan, Mongolia, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Tanzania, Morocco, Poland, Peru, Vietnam, Thailand, China, Laos, and Borneo.
During these expeditions, our students don't just observe the world; they become active participants and write their own stories, make their own mistakes, live their own adventures, learn, and grow with peers, and see the world with open eyes, focusing on those around them.
Global Citizenship Through Cultural Immersion
Our expeditions are meticulously designed to foster global citizenship through authentic cultural immersion. We believe in taking our students out of their comfort zones and into the heart of diverse cultures, broadening their horizons, and promoting understanding through the sharing of cultures.
Our students gain new and valuable insights through local initiatives such as planting trees to fight deforestation, visiting innovative wildlife rehabilitation centres, learning the art of rural agriculture, getting involved in local government initiatives that drive economic growth and many more awe-inspiring activities.
Life-Changing Adventures
These expeditions aren't just holidays; they are life-changing experiences that leave an indelible mark on our students. They walk away with a profound sense of self and a newfound confidence to take on the world.
"No mobile phones, no contact with home for a month, carrying everything we had on our backs and trekking and camping in the jungle with leaches, snakes and wild animals...I'd do it again in a heartbeat! It was tough but the challenges pulled us together as a team, every new experience and discovery, accomplishment, and wonder, we shared together. We met incredible people along the way and fell in love with their country. One day I'll return."
