BGS Sporting Successes 2024-2025
Here at Bury Grammar School we are incredibly proud of all our sporting successes, from National Champions and individual successes to our Sports Leaders and Elite Athlete Programme. Our pupils have enjoyed a wide range of opportunities, and in this academic year alone, there is much to be proud of.
Our U12 Girls’ Football Team Played at Radcliffe Stadium
In May, the U12 Girls' Football Team closed their season with a fantastic 2–1 win against Star Academy, Radcliffe.
It was a brilliant experience for all the players who had the opportunity to play at Radcliffe Stadium. Well done, team — a great way to end the season!

Sports Leaders
Throughout the year, our sports leaders were fantastic role models giving local primary pupils the opportunity to take part in competitive sporting events. Pupils and students from Years 7 to 12 held Multi-Sport Challenges and competitions, helped to coach our Primary Division teams, and developed their leadership skills.

Athletics Association
In May, our students took part in the Greater Manchester English Schools Athletic Association annual event at Longford Park, Stretford. Representing our school with enthusiasm, our Junior Boys and Girls (Years 7 & 8) and Inter Boys and Girls (Years 9 & 10) teams competed across a variety of events, gaining points individually that contributed to their overall team scores.
There were some impressive individual performances in both track and field.
-
Ethan in Year 7 ran a fantastic 1500m at the ESAA championships and secured the maximum 25 points. He also won the Bury School Cross Country race.
-
Mila in Year 8 earned 16 points in the Shot Put.
-
Eliza in Year 8 ran an impressive 800m to score 18 points.
-
Zia in Year 9 dominated the 200m with an impressive 20 points
-
Harry in Year 9 was the highest scoring inter boy with 21 points in the 100m
At the end of a competitive day, our Junior Girls’ team placed 5th, Junior Boys 7th, Inter Boys 8th and the Inter Girls team finished 6th overall. A huge well done to all the pupils who took part, you represented the school brilliantly and showed real determination in many of the athletic events.

Bury Primary Schools' Annual Athletics Cup: Going for Gold
In June, 16 pupils from Years 3–6 represented BGS at the Bury Athletics Cup — and what a team they were! Competing against 14 other schools, they showed strength, stamina, and shining sportsmanship across a host of events, from the shot put to the 600m.
Medal Highlights:
Silver – Freddie W (Shot Put), Abdullah A (600m), Omon I (Shot Put & 75m Sprint)
Gold – Lydia M (Standing Long Jump & 60m Sprint), Girls’ Relay Team: Omon U, Amelia G, Lydia M, and Issey S .
With a proud 2nd place finish overall, the BGS team impressed us all. Huge congratulations to all our young athletes and thank you to families who supported them bright and early on a Saturday morning!

The U12A Boys’ Football team won the Bury Football Plate Competition
The ‘A’ team started and finished their regular season with convincing wins over QEGS. In between, there were plenty of highs. The main theme of the year was that we were building the foundations for future success and trying players out in different positions. By the end of the season, we had developed a settled formation and personnel, leading to a seven-game unbeaten run and culminating in a victory in the Bury Plate final against Philips High School.

The U13A Boys’ Football team became Bury Champions
We are immensely proud of the success we had both on and off the pitch with our U13’s this season. Success isn’t just about winning games, tournaments and trophies. Success comes from growing together as a team, learning, developing and sharing a positive experience. We improved so much as a group from our first game in September, to our final game at the back end of April. A game that saw us victorious in the Bury plate final.
They have also had an 11-game winning streak which is still ongoing!
The U11 Football Team won the ISFA Northwest Tournament
Our U11 Boys football team performed superbly to become the North-West Independent Schools Football Association champions. We held off and overcame strong opposition from independent schools across the whole of the North-West of England! After initial nerves and just managing to progress from the group stages, we grew in confidence hugely, securing victories in two penalty shoot-outs; against The Grange School in the Quarter Final and Kings School Macclesfield in the Semi’s. Our overall victory was then confirmed with a well-fought 2-1 victory against Kings School Chester in the Final.

The U16s netball team finished runners up in the ‘Sisters n Sport’ plate competition.
In March, our U16 Netball team placed 2nd at the Sister n Sport National Finals. In the 1st match the team faced Caterham School and won 22-14, taking BGS through to the National Final match against Blue Coat, Oldham. Despite the team's best efforts and winning 3 out of the 4 quarters, they narrowly missed out on the win, finishing 18-14.
A huge well done to all players, the standard of play from our U16 team was outstanding, and we are incredibly proud of you all.

The U14s Netball team were crowned national champions in the ‘Sisters n Sport’ shield competition
Our U14 Netball team has triumphed in the Sisters n Sport National Netball Finals, winning the prestigious Shield Trophy after a day of incredible sporting performance at Loughborough University. This outstanding achievement truly highlights the teams’ dedication, skill, and hard work. The team started the day with an impressive 21-16 victory over Churston Ferrers in the semi-final, demonstrating excellent teamwork, resilience, and strategic play to secure their place in the highly anticipated National Final. In the final match against Bishop Stortford, the team showed exceptional composure and fighting spirit, to claim a close 19-18 victory and be crowned national champions!
The whole BGS community is incredibly proud of the team’s success, and we look forward to seeing what they achieve next! Well done!
