Celebrating Our Partnership with Bury Blind Society

At Bury Grammar School, we are actively involved in a wide range of initiatives with local schools and organisations, and we welcome opportunities to build new partnerships. One partnership that we are particularly proud of is our long-standing relationship with the Bury Blind Society, which we have supported for many years through fundraising, volunteering and community engagement. 

Our pupils fundraise for charity each year, but we know that true altruism goes far beyond fundraising; it means giving time, effort and care for the benefit of others. Through the School’s community service programme, many of our pupils volunteer their time and skills, making a real and lasting impact on the lives of those around them. 

 

Most recently, our Year 12 students demonstrated this commitment by taking the lead in organising and hosting a special Afternoon Tea for members of the Bury Blind Society. From planning the event to welcoming guests and ensuring everything ran smoothly, the students showed outstanding leadership, teamwork and organisational skills throughout. 

The afternoon provided a wonderful opportunity for members of the Society and our students to spend time together, enjoy conversation and build meaningful connections. It was a pleasure to see our students engaging so warmly with their guests and creating a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere. 

Arifa, a Year 12 student, told us: 

“Being involved in organising the Afternoon Tea was a fantastic experience. It was rewarding to see how much our guests enjoyed the afternoon, and it reminded us that community service is about much more than fundraising. Spending time with people, listening to their experiences and helping others feel valued is just as important.” 

Events such as this reflect the values at the heart of our community service programme. Whether through volunteering in the Sixth Form, participating in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme, supporting communities in less economically developed countries through World Challenge and Village by Village, or working alongside local organisations such as the Bury Blind Society, our pupils are encouraged to develop a lifelong commitment to helping others. 

Many of our pupils continue to support causes long after formal programmes have ended, and for some, these experiences help shape their future studies, careers and contributions to society.

I am incredibly proud of the maturity, warmth and commitment our students showed throughout the project, and I would like to thank the Bury Blind Society for their continued partnership and support.” 

We would like to thank the members of the Bury Blind Society for joining us and making the afternoon so enjoyable. We are also incredibly proud of our Year 12 students, whose leadership, kindness and dedication made the event such a success. We look forward to continuing this valued partnership for many years to come.
