Senior Sports Awards Evening Celebrating Boys and Girls Together
Here at Bury Grammar School (BGS) we recently celebrated our Senior School Sports Awards Evening, recognising a year of outstanding achievement, commitment, and participation across sport in Years 7 to 13. This year marked a particularly significant milestone, as it was the first ever combined Sports Awards Evening for both girls and boys, reflecting the School’s increasingly unified and inclusive sporting culture.
The event celebrated the School’s long-standing belief that sport, physical activity, and wellbeing are fundamental to a young person’s educational journey. Across the Senior School, pupils benefit from a rich and inclusive sporting programme designed not only to develop competitive excellence, but also to ensure that every individual has the opportunity to participate, grow in confidence, and discover a lifelong enjoyment of physical activity.
Our sporting provision once again proved to be wide-ranging and ambitious this year. Alongside a packed calendar of hundreds of fixtures throughout the academic year, pupils represented BGS with pride in sports including netball, basketball, rugby, football, swimming and athletics. Success was also seen across a variety of other disciplines such as badminton, tennis, table tennis, rounders, golf, handball, and yoga, reflecting the School’s commitment to offering opportunities for all interests and abilities.
The philosophy underpinning the programme was clear throughout the year: sport at Bury Grammar School is about far more than results. It is about participation, enjoyment, and personal development. Pupils have been encouraged to challenge themselves, support one another, and develop key life skills such as resilience, leadership, teamwork, communication, and self-discipline. Whether competing at local fixtures or representing the School at regional and national level, pupils consistently demonstrated determination, sportsmanship, and pride in representing BGS. A number of pupils also achieved representative honours, with some reaching national and international standards.
The Sports Awards Evening provided an opportunity to celebrate these achievements and recognise the dedication shown by pupils across Years 7 to 13. Awards were presented to individuals and teams who have excelled throughout the year, while special recognition was given to those who had made exceptional contributions to school sport both on and off the field.

Speaking at the event, the Director of Sport reflected on the wider impact of the programme:
“This year has been a true celebration of effort, commitment, and enjoyment. While we are proud of our competitive successes, we are equally proud of every pupil who stepped forward to take part, challenge themselves, and represent the School with pride. Sport at Bury Grammar School is about developing character as much as performance, and that has been evident in abundance this year.”
Sports Captain, Leia, also addressed the audience, highlighting the sense of community and shared experience within sport at Bury Grammar School:
“Being part of sport here means so much more than winning matches. It’s about teamwork, friendships, and learning to push ourselves and each other. I’m incredibly proud of everything we’ve achieved together this year, and of the way everyone has supported each other across the season.”
As the evening concluded, it was clear that the success of sport at BGS extends far beyond medals and scorelines. The Sports Awards Evening served as a fitting celebration for staff, pupils and families, and we would like to sincerely thank everyone for their involvement, commitment, and dedication throughout the year.
