A record-breaking year for Bury Grammar School GCSE Pupils

Congratulations to our wonderful Year 11 pupils!

Their very hard-earned and exceptionally well-deserved top GCSE grades have broken school records and set them up for the brightest futures.

There were smiles and plenty of celebrations as our pupils opened their results this morning, securing the grades they need to continue their studies in Bury Grammar Sixth Form and take the next steps towards their future ambitions.

The average GCSE result is a grade 7 (A) as BGS pupils score the highest proportion of grade 9s and 8s (A**-A*) the School has seen outside of the Covid era.

37% of GCSE results are grades 9-8 (A**-A*), 54% are grades 9-7 (A**-A) and 90% are grades 9-5 (A**-B).

Our brilliant pupils exceeded all expectations - scoring nearly four times as many of the top 9-7 (A**-A) grades than projected, demonstrating the extent to which hard work and BGS teaching can really set you apart.

As a School, we are incredibly proud of this whole generation of pupils who have also achieved so much outside of the classroom over the past five years and could not have contributed more to school life.

Some individual GCSE performances stand out even against this impressive backdrop.

Twenty-four pupils have a clean sweep of all 9-7s (A**-As), and eleven pupils have a stellar set of all 9-8s (A**-As).

In addition, Ava, Mustafa, Natasha and twins Sahar and Sarah have all achieved perfect sets of nine GCSEs at grade 9.

Many congratulations to all!

Celebrating an Outstanding Collection of Grade 9s!

Joining BGS in Year 7, twins Sahar and Sarah are simply outstanding pupils who have excelled throughout their years at school. Both were delighted with their perfect sets of nine 9s and couldn’t quite believe their results! They are the very first set of Bury Grammar twins to achieve this magnificent feat.

Sahar said, ‘I just want to say a massive thank you to all the teachers and staff who have supported me. I couldn’t have done it without their support. I can’t wait to see what the next two years hold at BGS!’ and Sarah commented, ‘I am so thankful for all the teachers and friends who have supported me over the years and I am really excited to carry on at Sixth Form!’

Exceptionally talented linguists, Sarah was awarded our French Scholarship, while Sahar came first in the National German Translation Bee two years ago. Both have been fantastic Prefects and Peer Mentors and aspire to become doctors. They are going to continue to pursue their passion for languages alongside their scientific studies in BGS Sixth Form. Many congratulations to them!

Mustafa also has a perfect set of nine grade 9s at GCSE and undoubtedly has a bright future ahead. He produced an unforgettable HPQ on electric planes that amazed teachers, delivering his presentation entirely without notes. While characteristically modest on results day, he is immensely proud of his results, as are his teachers. A Year 11 Prefect, with a particular talent for Mathematics and aspirations to pursue Medicine, Mustafa’s abilities were evident from an early age when he impressed the whole school by reciting Pi to an incredible 314 decimal places – a number he chose because it reflects 3.14! (And we know he could have recited more!)

Natasha and Ava are equally proud of their perfect sets of GCSE results, and both have engaged in numerous activities outside the classroom alongside their academic studies.

Natasha has been an outstanding role model through her involvement in sports, CCF and Concert Band, achieving notable successes including the U14 National Netball Shield, Grade 8 Music and the UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge.

Ava has similarly enjoyed a range of sports and her involvement in the RAF. Both pupils have also completed their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Awards, embracing the challenge and making lasting memories along the way.

Looking ahead, Natasha intends to pursue her ambition to work in Medicine, while Ava embarks upon BGS Sixth Form life as our Biology Scholar, studying Chemistry and Psychology alongside this, as she prepares for a future in the clinical field. Ava commented, ‘BGS has offered me the best opportunities and couldn’t ask for better teachers, and I am very grateful for all your support over the past 5 years.’

We are incredibly proud of all our pupils’ achievements and of the people they have become. We look forward to welcoming our Year 11s into BGS Sixth Form next month!

Principal, Jo Anderson, said:

‘We are exceptionally proud of all our Year 11 pupils and their record-breaking exam results. Many congratulations to every single one of them and to our brilliant teachers. These results demonstrate just what can be achieved when pupils have high aspirations, are determined to succeed, and have incredible support around them. Their teachers and I have absolutely loved working with them over the years.

Today we are delighted to be awarding a number of Sixth Form subject scholarships for outstanding individual performances and Academic Scholarships for excellent performances across the board.

Beyond this, what bodes so well for this generation of young people is that their talents are not confined to the academic. The past five years have been marked by sporting triumphs, inspirational musical and dramatic performances, volunteering in the local community, prefecting responsibilities, participation in our Combined Cadet Force and Duke of Edinburgh expeditions, as well as successes in academic national competitions and the HPQ (higher project qualification).

Today we are brimming with optimism and are truly joyful for our Year 11s – not only for their outstanding achievements to date but also for the promise their futures hold.’
