Whilst we believe that pastoral care is the responsibility of every member of the Bury Grammar School family, we pride ourselves on the skills and expertise of our dedicated Pastoral Team.
In Kindergarten, Infant School and the Junior Schools the Key Worker or Form Teacher have a great deal of contact with each pupil and work hard to care for the pastoral needs of the younger members of our BGS family, working with either the Head of Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), the Head of the Infant and Girls’ Junior School, or the Head of the Boys' Junior School.
In the Senior School, Form Tutors work with a small group of tutees on a daily basis and endeavour to know each student on a personal level. As such, Form Tutors are aware of the individual needs of each student, guide them on a daily basis and play a key role in helping to monitor academic performance in relation to potential. Heads of Year have overall responsibility for their year group and work closely with Form Tutors, students and parents in order to ensure individual needs are met and any issues addressed as swiftly and effectively as possible. Heads of Year report to and are supported by the Deputy Head (Pastoral).
All members of staff liaise with the Designated Safeguarding Lead and with the School Health Team in order to ensure that BGS remains a secure environment which promotes the health, welfare and safety of every pupil. At BGS, we are also fortunate to have on site a School Counsellor on a weekly basis to provide confidential support and advice. We also have a Head of PSHE and E-safety Officer who works alongside the Heads of School, Deputy Heads (Pastoral), the School Nurse and Heads of Year to create a comprehensive programme of study.
